More Precious than Gold

We have been learning to write excellent paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, and closing sentences.  Our most recent paragraphs are about those things which are the most valuable to each of us.  Love the hyperboles (exaggerations) that are beginning to pop up in their writings.  Come see more of these writings in our hallway.

Pi Day

Our class had the privilege to recite this poem about Pi Day on Tiger TV.
The symbol for Pi is a Greek letter and it is the abbreviation for perimeter.
Pi is rounded to 3.14, but in our poem we recited the first 50 digits.

Roses are Red, Violets are blue … 3.141592
PI is a number that is mighty fine … 653589
Practice this often until it sticks … 79323846
Practice when you swim since there’s nothing else to do … 26433832
Let no one ignorant of geometry enter this door 79502884
Numbers rule the universe, so let’s all shout with glee … 1971693

Gruffalo

We read The Gruffalo which has sold over 10 million copies. Before we read the story or looked at the cover, we predicted what the story might be about from the title. Then I presented a description of the Gruffalo and we all tried to visualize what he might look like from that description before seeing the illustrations. I explained that the mouse tries to persuade the other animals throughout the story and instructed the children to listen for examples of persuasion. There are several examples of alliteration in the story too.

There is a sequel to the story: The Gruffalo’s Child.  There are some great descriptive words in the story and it has traits like a “tall tale”.

Happy 100th Anniversary Girl Scouts

Today we celebrated the 100th year anniversary of Girl Scouts.  Do you know who founded Girl Scouts?  Scratch off the green square to check your answer.

The KRCS Girl Scouts celebrated this special day with some of the teachers who had been in scouting when they were young girls.  The girls presented a striking bird bath to the school at the end of the event.

Planets

Use this poem and link to review space concepts.

This is a fun site for children to learn more about space.  We explored it in the computer lab.

Fine Arts Week

We were privileged to participate in a variety of outstanding events during Fine Arts Week.  First, we enjoyed performances by opera singers and Irish musicians and dancers.  The children drew with chalk around the school on Monday and we had a sculptor visit during our art class.  Next was a performance by a brass quintet and that evening was the Talent Show.  On Wednesday, the second grade performed Go Fish and finally we had an author share her writing skills with us on Thursday.  There were also some very humorous segments on Tiger TV by Ms. McGuire and Mrs. Bower.
