Yearbooks

It is a KRCS tradition to sign yearbooks on the last day of school. As I was reading through my yearbook, I found this. It made my heart sing!

Graduation

My first KRCS second grade class graduated over the weekend! What a privilege to see them and their families at baccalaureate and graduation. This photo was taken at the school’s first location in the refurbished grocery store. They are wearing our original uniforms.

Another Lab in High School

Mrs. Marcus’ fourth grade class joined Mrs. Fedas’ AP biology class for a lab about natural selection. The fourth graders were divided into groups of four and each member was given a different method for gathering food (fork, spoon, knife, or his/her fingers). They had to gather food (beans and pasta) using that method in a given amount of time. We graphed the results from four generations. Which animal will best survive? I love working at a PK through 12 school!

Lab Helpers

Classroom teachers have a variety of positive behavior incentives. One of the rewards a student may choose is to help me feed all of our lab animals- fish, crabs, turtles, frogs, and ducks. We presently have pollywogs and pill bugs in the lab too. This kindergarten scientist and I were caught on film by Mrs. Beach as she arrived at school. I’m not sure who enjoys this time together more.

Ocean Unit

PreK scientists completed their study of the pond and are currently in an ocean unit. This lab focused on the difference between salt water and fresh water, as well as understandings about why some things float, but others sink.

We mixed salt into one of two cups filled with water. The salt dissolved and formed a solution. When we dropped the bead into the salt water, it floated but the beads sank in the cup of fresh water. Look at what happened when we dropped food coloring in the cups. Why does the coloring float on top of the salt water? Then we dropped raw eggs into salt and fresh water.

The children shared their ideas about why some things float and others sink. Most believed that objects that are big or heavy sink. Also, things with holes in them sink. They made a hypothesis before they each dropped an item into the tank. When our hypothesis didn’t match the results, we learned something new and that made us rethink our original ideas. (Notice that the larger things are floating.)

Then my PreK students used the microscopes to observe salt crystals. I wish you could have seen their expressions when they first saw the salt crystals.

High School Chem Lab

Mrs. Price’s third grade class was invited for a chemistry lesson hosted by Mrs. McFadin’s AP chemistry class. Her students (some of who were my former students) prepared several chemistry demonstrations and then taught my students how to make ice cream in a bag. Click here to learn more about making ice cream. It is such a blessing to work in a PK-12th grade school!

Zoo Field Trip

I accompanied the Pre-First and kindergarten classes to the zoo. It was a cool day, and the animals were active and so much fun to observe. These scientists just completed their study of animals around the world, so they especially enjoyed visiting the rainforest, desert, and African savanna exhibits.

The bus ride is always exciting for our students because they don’t ride on one often!
