Composting

As part of their living and nonliving unit, first grade scientists reused plastic bottles to make planters for marigold seeds. We learned about compost and placedĀ  a piece of newspaper, a green leaf, a banana peel, and a stick in the soil. How long will it take for them to decompose? We looked at a plant’s life cycle and reviewed what living things need to grow. This was a great introduction to their environmental unit as well. Click here to watch a child friendly video about composting. Watch for updates.

Creature Feature

Abigail’s family donated an aquaponics tank to the lab. Since we already have fish, I added four apple snails. We are learning about their life cycle, habitat, and body parts. Snails are oviparous, so we hope to see some eggs soon. They are a fun new addition!

Visitor

This beautiful bird has been a frequent visitor to the pond behind school. Ryan and her mom captured a photo of the egret over the weekend. Maybe, it thinks our ducks are family! That would be a fun story line for a children’s book.
