PreK scientists continued their study of color. Through the investigation, they learned water and oil are both liquids, but they don’t mix! We practiced using a pipette by releasing drops of colored water into vegetable oil. This is also a fun way to practice self-control.

Third grade scientists continued investigating thermal energy and matter in lab. This was such a fast paced lab, I wasn’t able to capture many pictures. The following demonstration was an impressive way to explore heat energy and air pressure concepts.  Click here to watch a video.

From our previous experiments, we learned that warm air or liquid rises and cool air or liquid falls. I placed hot water (red) on top of cold water (blue) and the colors remained separate. Then I reversed the procedure and the colors immediately mixed. Click here to learn more.

I purchased bullfrog tadpoles for the lab, so that we could observe metamorphosis, last May. Our tadpoles are finally growing back legs! It is almost September! I wonder why they are moving through their life cycle so slowly?

After Rilynn brought me this wasp, I did some research because I was unfamiliar with this species. This is a cicada killing wasp. Click here to learn more about this interesting wasp.

 In the first photo, we dropped ice cubes with blue food coloring on one side of the tank and warm water with red food coloring on the other. Convection currents affect weather all over the earth.

I am ready for another excellent year in the science lab.

I am always looking for ways to make my room more exciting. This year I added a volcano. Student work that is “on fire” will be displayed around it!

The lab animals are so happy that I am back in school. They constantly entertain me! I discovered this cricket on Jabba’s head. It reminded me of the folktale, The Gingerbread Boy. The fox tricks the Gingerbread cookie into sitting on his head while they cross the river. I think you can guess the ending.
