Nature’s Classroom Overnight

We had perfect weather for the Nature Classroom overnight on Lookout Mountain.

Did you hear about the ORT report? After every meal, the amount of food and beverage that was thrown away was weighed. The children learned how much energy is wasted with every pound of food that is discarded. I hope they will remember that lesson at school!

Before each meal, twelve student waitrons set the tables. At the end of each meal, they also cleared the tables and washed them.

Another one of my favorite memories was playing four square with your children during free time. I had so much fun!

Moths

Mrs. Bowman shot this video as she got out of her car at King’s Ridge on Tuesday morning. Click here to watch the video. She thought they were bats, but discovered they were actually moths. When I went outside as the sun rose, only one remained visible. He flew away after I took his picture. Look at the large spots on their wings that look like owl eyes. It is a great defense mechanism to scare away predators!

I did some research on these silk moths. Click here.

Invention Convention and Minnow Tank

Fourth graders were invited to participate in our first annual Invention Convention. They went through the invention process and designed a prototype that they shared with their classmates and teachers. The following week, fifteen entrepreneurs participated in our version of the TV show Shark Tank which we called Minnow Tank. Many thanks to our panel, Dr. De La Rosa, Mrs. Kurtz, and Mr. Lamkin, for sharing their time and expertise with these students. The panel shared specific ideas with each group about how their products could be improved, as well as marketing strategies, and suggestions for pricing and packaging. I know our students left inspired!

Happy Valentines Day!

I said a prayer for you today
And know God must have heard.
I felt the answer in my heart
Although he spoke no word.
I didn’t ask for wealth or fame
(I knew you wouldn’t mind.)
I asked him to send treasures of a far more lasting kind!
I asked that he be near you
At the start of each new day,
To grant you health and blessings
And friends to share your way!
I asked for happiness for you
In all things great and small
But it was for his loving care
I prayed for most of all!

Third Grade Visit

Third grade wrapped up their unit on vertebrates with a visit from Dr. Roesner from Loving Hands Animal Clinic.  She brought three animals with her and spoke on pet care. Love having people in our community share their expertise with our children!

They also offer a shadow program:  “Loving Hands Animal Clinic is proud to offer a shadow program which is open to all students ages 6-17 with an interest in veterinary medicine. Students will get to witness firsthand the inner workings of our full-service hospital.”
