What will happen to conversation hearts if we drop them into a cup of water? Will something different occur if we drop them into a cup of Sprite? Vocabulary included, solid, liquid, gas, sink, float, and carbon dioxide.

My youngest scientists finished lab by learning more about color science. How do you make pink? Look at all the tints of pink we created with just red and white paint.

Teaching science concepts across the curriculum makes our science units so much more meaningful. After studying invertebrates, second grade entomologists made these original insects in art class. They have three body parts, six legs, antennae, and wings.

Third graders are studying environmental science and they always tell me that this is one of their favorite projects. It is a great reminder that you can reuse trash and turn it into something beautiful and fun! This is just a few of these projects. They are all on display in the Media Center.

First graders reviewed the concept that white light consists of the visible spectrum (rainbow colors). Black is the absence of color. A tint is created by adding white to any color thereby making it lighter (pink or gray). A shade is created by adding black to any color, thereby making it darker. We used the primary colors to create the secondary colors with color fizzers. Then we folded dippity dye paper and dipped the corners and sides into red, yellow, and blue food coloring. When we opened the paper, we each had a unique design and the colors mixed to create orange, green, and purple.

Scientists in Mrs. Fox’s class used their knowledge of frogs to complete these masterpieces.  They also wrote facts they learned about a frog’s habitat, diet, body parts, and life cycle.

Kindergarten biologists in Mrs. Hornsby’s class have been studying life cycles and metamorphosis in science. They learned about symmetry and measured their butterfly’s wing span with nonstandard units. I love to see science integrated with other disciplines!

After learning about Snowflake Bentley, we cut some snowflakes of our own. The children couldn’t wait to unfold each snowflake.
