New Books

I offer the fourth graders the opportunity to purchase Scholastic Books throughout the year. I use the bonus points from their orders to select books for the Science Lab and for classroom libraries. This month, I chose the books below and a magnetic fishing game for our PreK program. If your classroom doesn’t order Scholastic books and you would like to have that opportunity too, please let me know and I will send an order form home with your child.

Penguins

When I plan science units for each grade level, I use a multi-disciplinary approach. Science is integrated with the other subject areas, includng art, music, social studies, reading, writing, technology, and math. Kindergarten and Pre-First classes have been studying Antarctica. After reading Tacky the penguin stories, the children had a Tacky Day and dressed like characters from the story. Tacky is a penguin that doesn’t follow the crowd!

New Resource

I love sharing new resources with my blog family. While browsing Barnes and Noble, I recently saw this series of non-fiction books. There is a large selection of books available in the series and they can be purchased for your Kindle. This series is recommended for children ages four through eight years old.

Summer Ideas

I am often asked by parents, ‘What should I do this summer to help maintain and strengthen my child’s skills?” These are my suggestions:

Read: Read to your child, ask him/her to read to you, and read silently together. Read a variety of genres. There are also some great children’s magazines. Visit the public library.

Don’t forget to get your KRCS summer reading books.

Write: Keep a summer journal. Write letters to friends and family. Make lists.

Memorize all addition and subtraction facts and begin to memorize multiplication and division facts.  Use Xtra Math.

Practice counting money and telling time on an analog clock. Compute elapsed time and give correct change.

Practice cursive.

Visit places in and outside Atlanta to increase vocabulary.

Play board games and do puzzles to develop problem solving skills.

I hope you have a safe, fun-filled summer. Make lots of memories!
