Bucket Lists

My students always write goals for the upcoming year. This year, I decided to have them make “Bucket Lists”. We discussed that a “Bucket List” is a list of goals that you want to complete by a certain time.  This is the first writing we took through the writing process – prewrite (share ideas and brainstorm), first draft, revise and edit, and final draft. Each child had a conference with me to discuss ways in which this writing could be improved. Most of the final drafts are published in the hall. (A few students who were absent will finish soon.)

Synonyms

We have been learning more about synonyms, words with the same meaning. Good readers and writers learn and use synonyms.

I try to anchor all mini-lessons with good literature. We read I Knew a Librarian Who Chewed On a Word.  We listened for all the different synonyms for ate and listed them on our anchor chart. Finally, each of the children added a pair of synonyms.

I also explained that some words are worn out, such as nice, look, and like. I created a visual for them by placing those words on our garbage can. When we write, we will try to think of synonyms for those words to make our writing more powerful.

Wordle

We learned how to use a fun site called Wordle today. Unfortunately, the computers in the lab weren’t cooperative. The children want to try to make a Wordle at home. They make great gifts.

Comparing With Adjectives

We have been learning how to use “er” and “est” to compare with adjectives.
We discovered that sometimes you need to use the words more or most.
It was fun using our families to practice this concept.

More Precious than Gold

We have been learning to write excellent paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, and closing sentences. Our most recent paragraphs are about those things which are the most valuable to each of us.  Love the hyperboles (exaggerations) that are beginning to pop up in their writings. Come see more of these writings in our hallway.

We Have Dreams Too!

We read about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. Then we used his “I Have a Dream Speech” as a model for our writing. We thought about ways that the world could be a better place for our children, just as Dr. King dreamed about a better place for his children.

Perspective

In reading, I have introduced the literary term perspective. We practiced this concept by thinking of items for which someone or something else may be thankful. Look at some of the examples below:

George said, “If I were a football player, I would be thankful for the touchdown zone, my football, my pads, my mouthpiece, my eyes, and my feet.”

Cailin stated, “If I were a horse, I would be thankful for hay, grass, water, trainers, riders, and friends.”

Makena said, “If I were a rock star, I would be thankful for music, microphones, the stage, my fans, my voice, and radios.”

Aaron wrote, “If I were Olly, my guinea pig, I would be thankful for hay, Aaron, water, a cage, bedding, fur, oxygen, and a lock.”

Hudson explained, “If I were a policeman, I would be thankful for my gun, my police car, my partner, my chief, and my computer.”

Persuasive Turkeys

We wrote a persuasive paragraph with a topic sentence, three details, and a closing sentence. Wow, we have learned a lot about writing! Come and read the rest of the paragraphs across from our room.
