Aliens

I connected our study of space with reading and writing. For our culminating Space Unit activity, we read Here Come the Aliens. After we created our own alien, we filled in the missing adjectives and nouns in a mad lib.  We used thesauruses to find interesting adjectives. We were surprised at how adjectives can change a story. You’ll definitely want to come down our hallway for a closer look at this project!

Interesting Fact

How did the planets receive their names? All of the planets, except for Earth, are named after Greek and Roman gods.

Mercury- winged Roman god of travel
Venus- Roman goddess of love
Mars- Roman god of war
Jupiter- Zeus by the Greeks
Saturn- Roman name for for the Greek Cronos, god of farming
Uranus- Greek god of the sky
Neptune- Roman god of the sea

We discussed this fact and decided that God wouldn’t want his beautiful creation to be named after a false god!  (Something to think about.)

Fact or Opinion

We completed two writing activities to demonstrate our understanding of the difference between facts and opinions. As a class we compiled a list of facts and opinions about fall and displayed our ideas among deciduous trees.

We each chose an animal photo and wrote a fact and an opinion about that animal. I asked the children to demonstrate the knowledge they gained during our animal unit.

Lola Molts

We noticed that Lola looked pale which was the sign she was going to shed her skin. Then we watched as she worked hard to pull off her old skin by rubbing it against the rocks and sand. She also tried pulling it off with her mouth. About an hour later, she finally rubbed off the last piece around her face.
