Morning Meeting



Every day we use the calendar and weather chart to review math concepts.

I write upcoming events on the calendar and the children refer to it often. They write the numbers on the calendar each day. This month we are using cardinal (counting) numbers, but we will use ordinal numbers in September.  n future months, watch for number words and Roman numerals. I ask questions about the calendar. For example, what are the dates of the Fridays in August?  If today is the 3rd, what date will it be in two weeks? If August ends on a Friday, on which day of the week will September begin?

This month our weather chart is a tally chart. In upcoming months, watch for a pictograph, bar graph, and circle graph.

We add a penny each day and then make trades for nickels, dimes, and quarters. When we reach the 100th day, we will have a dollar.

We are also learning to write the word and expanded forms of each number and to determine if a number is odd or even. We will begin rounding to the nearest ten in September.

Each day four children write an equation that equals the date. Our mental math skills are growing stronger, and we are recognizing number patterns. We work on skip counting, multiplication and division too.

It is amazing how many skills we cover in just a few minutes!

Congratulations!

Thanks to Mrs. Dickey for introducing us to Xtra Math!  What a great program! Riley is the first to achieve 100% mastery in addition. Jake and Cailin are not far behind. Mastery of basic facts will increase your child’s accuracy, speed, and therefore confidence.

Way to go Riley!

Coordinate Graphs

We have been learning to locate and read points on a coordinate graph. We played two games to practice these skills. The first was a team game in which each team attempted to be the first to place four magnets in a row. In the second partner game, one player hid stickers on a coordinate grid and his/her partner guessed ordered pairs until they found all the stickers. To help us remember to move horizontally first, we said that you must go down the hall before you can go up the elevator.

Symmetry and Creativity

We dropped paint on one side of a piece of paper.  Then we refolded the paper and rubbed it to make a symmetrical design.  We reopened the paper and after it dried, we added details.  What imaginations!

Math Turkeys

I have been so impressed with the mental math skills I have seen this year. The students in my math group each wrote a target number on a turkey and then wrote equations which equaled the selected number.

Restaurant Math

We pretended to be in a restaurant today during math. I acted as hostess and seated each group of children. They reviewed a menu, wrote an order, and then calculated their bills. They brought me their bill and I checked it with a cash register.
