Rainbows and Moonbows

Although I grew up in Kentucky, I recently visited Cumberland Falls State Park for the first time.

“Known as the ‘Niagara of the South,’ the 125-foot curtain of water falling into a boulder-strewn gorge is dramatic day or night. But it is only during a full moon that you can see the moonbow, a phenomenon not found anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere!”

Although I observed a rainbow over the falls, I want to return to see the moonbow!

Another Strange Find

What do you see? What do you wonder?

Lichen Caterpillar

I thought it was lichen that had fallen during the storm, but then to my surprise, it crawled along the handrail. What a great example of camouflage! Read more about this underwing moth caterpillar here.

Spiderlings

My daughter noticed that spiderlings hatched from an egg case in a web outside her window. The spiderlings weren’t much larger than a pencil point.

In the beloved classic children’s story, Charlotte’s Web, Charlotte makes her egg case in the fall before she dies.

This is the time of year when spiders and their webs are more noticeable.

Joro Spiders once again weave webs that fill the Georgia forests.
