Nature Journals
Before cameras, scientists and artists documented the natural world in their journals. Beatrix Potter, Henry David Thoreau, and Lewis and Clark all kept journals about their discoveries.
Keeping a nature journal is not a discipline I’ve tried, but what an engaging strategy to develop science, writing, and art skills with nature lovers of all ages. “The more I look, the more I see.”
Some suggestions:
Record the location, time, and the date in your entry.
Include labels and note details. Use all your senses.
Research the common and scientific name of the animal, plant, or fungus.
Add any thoughts or reflections.
Return sometime later and record changes.
Along with your journal, bring a pencil, colored pencils, and something to sit upon.
A journal, like the following example, can be purchased or if you prefer, create one of your own.

I have recently begun following Susanne Thompson, a photographer, author, artist, and naturalist! Below is an entry from her journal.
